Felt really good to unload a kiln full of locally prospected glazes! I guess it's kinda like how tomatos from your own garden always taste better. Speaking of taste; I had 3 glaze flavors in this firing: 1. Mt. Edgecumbe volcanic ash (red to black). 2. 80/20 mix of Edgecumbe Ash and Sitka Spruce wood ash. (black). 3. Three part mix of Starrigaven River silt, Edgecumbe Ash, and Sitka Spruce wood ash. All fired in electric oxidation to cone 11. There are a few more materials on deck, and when the Christmas hustle slows down I'm looking forward to mixing some new line blends and developing some oilspots. The tiles are 4. Medvejie monzanite. 5. Halibut Point Beach sand. 6. Sitka Spruce Ash. 7. Harbor Mountain road cut clay. (8. Utah Lava Oilspot for comparison). These pots will all be headed to the GSAC Artisan's Market this weekend in Sitka. Most of the remaining pieces will be uploaded onto my website early next week for last minute holiday shopping. Stay tuned for more on that - still got one more kiln to fire! 🔥 . . . . _____ #porcelain #glaze #pottery #ceramic #research #geology #science #sitka #kilnpeople #studio #craft #Alaska #material #ceramicglaze #ceramicaction #ceramics #pottersofinstagram #nerd #materialscience #firedinaskutt #glazetesting #lagunaclay #art #rocks #rockhound #contemporaryceramics #design #ak
Cooked up some new cone 6 glazes! Metallic Black, Sapphire Blue, Seattle Purple. Here's one with Mt. St. Helens ash! 🔥🌋🔥 It's a 5 part recipe: 20 Ash, 20 Frit 3134, 20 Grolleg, 20 Silica, 20 Dolomite. In the pictures: 1.Porcelain Bowl fired to cone 5 - 2. Porcelain tile fired to cone 7 - 3. Pine Lake Stoneware tile fired to cone 7 - 4. Porcelain tile fired to cone 5.
Manganese is the new Cobalt. Haha. Ok, maybe I can't back that up at all... but there have been some killer iridescent glazes (@lisazolandz) showing up in my feed lately! @ceramicmaterialsworkshop just posted a sweet tile with a manganese crystalline glaze today. They've got me thinking back to the scanning electron images I took back in grad school at Utah State. Here's one from my vault. It's a 5000x zoom in of a manganese crystal nucleus. Pretty wild, eh? If memory serves, this glaze was a variation of David Shaner's glaze, which was given to my by John Tilton. 68% Custer, 2% EPK, 27.5 Manganese Dioxide, 2.5% Granular Manganese. . . _________ #manganese #glazetests #research #art #ceramics #glaze #SEM #porcelain #microscope #clay #mn #kiln #crystal #firedinaskutt #testing #ceramicglaze #artistsofinstagram #science #element #ceramicart #crystalline #glazerecipe
Here's a few tiles where the glaze ran like crazy. Notice how the clay holder caught the glaze, and notice too, that it's still completely legible. A few people have asked me about the clay I use for this. It doesn't really matter. I'd say that wadding works best, but it's also expensive. I've never had a problem with using regular clay, but you gotta be careful to dry them out in the kiln (200° for an hour or so) before you rock and roll. 🔥🔥🔥 Also, if you're wondering, these are a few variations of some local Mt. Edgecumbe volcanic ash blended with spruce wood ash! Laguna Porcelain on the top, Seattle Pottery Supply Stoneware on the bottom. 🌋🌲🌋🌲🌋🌲 . . . . _________ #process #glazetests #potters #research #cone10 #ceramics #glaze #tile #porcelain #redundancy #clay #wip #kiln #firedinaskutt #testing #ceramicglaze #art #potteryglaze #testing #pottersofinstagram #ashglaze #stoneware
Dipping tiles. Quite a while back I got real sick of chiseling out melted tiles from extruded tile holders. It was also a bummer losing information when a group slumped, shifted, and melted together. I also got tired of making, firing, storing, and lugging around bigger, more elaborate tiles. My solution is to make giant 18"x18" slabs and then cutting them into 2" x 1"x 1/4" units. This process makes about 150 tiles in one go, and after drying and firing, I can fit about 4-500 bisque tiles into a clay box. It also means I can keep lugging around thousands of finished glaze tests without taking up tons of studio space. The real trade off is that the glaze area is a bit small, and there's an added step of supporting the tile upright. That said, my last post detailed the benefits of "wadding" holders. There are great reasons for doing things differently, but this is specifically how my process has evolved since I mixed my first glaze almost 20 years ago. . . . . _________ #process #glazetests #research #cone6 #ceramics #glaze #tile #porcelain #redundancy #clay #wip #kiln #firedinaskutt #testing #ceramicglaze #art #potteryvideos
#oddlysatisfying I like to number my tiles 3 times, because glaze usually goes exactly where I don't want it. The underglaze numbers go on the front and sides. The third number gets etched onto the small chunk of clay that holds each tile vertical in the kiln. After each firing the clay holders come right off like wadding. These clay holders have the added benefit of catching a lot of runaway glaze and saving kiln shelves. It's usually the case that when the glaze does goes fluid and drips down far enough to fuse the two, the only remaining number is the one etched in the holder. I like the redundancy, even though its a few added steps. . . . . _________ #luckynumber13 #process #glazetests #research #cone6 #ceramics #glaze #tile #porcelain #redundancy #clay #wip #kiln #firedinaskutt #testing #ceramicglaze #art #potteryvideos
Here's what a bunch of melted rocks and half-brewed glaze concoctions look like. #ceramics #research #glazetesting
Here's the edge of a tiny Oil Spot droplet from one of my ceramic glazes zoomed in at 10,000 magnification. The structures here are mostly hematite and magnetite. On the left, there's a much higher concentration of iron, which readily crystallizes, and you move left, the proportion of silica and alumina increase, thus the smaller more fractal crystals. Pretty neat stuff if you ask me! Feeling sentimental. Or maybe I'm just spending a lot of time these days mining through old research and plotting my next moves. Iron Here's a throwback to my Oilspot, Iron, and dirt glaze research at the #redlodgeclaycenter. I wonder if anyone has the the ball mill since me? 😉 . . . . #brown #ceramics #glaze #pottery #montanaclay #iron #porcelain #potsinaction #pottersofinstagram #rlcc #stilllife #pia #art #design #shelves #cups #artist #nerds #minerals #geology #mt #clay
